about time Welcome to our lunch and learn Local District West parent of community engagement unit Benito's to listen to this session in English to Spanish you are going to find the white Globe at the bottom of your screen and select your language preference for mobile devices touch your screen and select language what is cultured stone Espanol badass in Spanish on tablets are devices by touching your screen and selecting languages is the sissy on a Strava. seasick weather exercise thank you again for joining us for a late afternoon lunch and learn session with the Local District West. engagement unit if we were in a physical environment we have snacks juice and water for you but we're in a virtual environment so you have to bring your own so hopefully you have some snacks and you are ready for some time of learning so I'm dr. Tracy Calhoun on the Proud at ministrator of parent and Community engagement for local district West and we're so happy that you joined us for the parent portal training joining me today my fabulous team of parent educator coaches Miss Jill O'Brien Miss Lorraine Ayala and mr. Anthony Williams also joining us is our fabulous parent I'm so sorry our family fabulous interpreter translator Miss Pamela Shepherd Garcia at the bottom of the screen you will see our website where you can find a lot of valuable resources our contact information is also included on this slide which will reappear again at the end of the session the benefits of family engagement are well-documented in the research what we know is that students who have engage families adapt well to school and attend regularly they have better social skills and behavior and they graduate and go on to higher education I'm sure that you'll agree with that students with engage families do better in school and life one way that way gauge our families to install one way that we engage our families is to ensure that we have effective and consistent home to school communication this two-way communication really strengthens the Partnerships between are schools in our families one so that we use to assist with this communication is the parent portal the benefits of the parent portal are vast parents to register the portal have the ability to contact all of their child's teachers monitor grades and assignments and schoology keep track of progress towards graduation access student records and much much more during this time this unprecedented pandemic it is critically important that all of our parents are registered for parent portal along with being able to communicate with your school the parent portable also be the place that you go to access your child curriculum during this time of distance learning so we're going to spend the next 35 minutes or so going over how to register for the parent how parents can link their students to their account verifying pins and then we're going to take a walk through to look at the features of the parent portal including schoology where the share some the Force is with you and we're going to spend some time answering question so regarding question if you look at the bottom of your screen you should see a Q&A and that Q&A when you open that allow you to post questions in the Q&A box we will try to answer all of the questions in real time and if we're unable to answer your question at the end of the session will you will be provided with an evaluation Link in the chat where you can submit your melidress and will get back to you we'd like to start with a simple inclusion activity this inclusion activity is going to have you just take a moment and think to yourself what do you already know about the parent portal for some of our new families it might not be that much and that's okay that's why you joined us today and for some of our families that have been for a while you know something about the parent portal take a moment to think about what you already know about the airport thank you now what I'd like for you to do take a moment to think about what you want to learn about the parent portal what brought you here today great so our end goal this presentation is to confirm what you already know about the parent portal and then to answer those questions about what you want to learn about the parent portal at the end of the webinar we will do little process check and see how well we did for us meeting our objective so now I'm going to hand off to mr. Anthony Williams who will walk us through how to register for an account and how to lie your student to your account Anthony thank you once again welcome you'll notice that there is a flyer on the left side of your Porter screen you may have already been write this flyer from your school if not you can find this flyer on our local district West Community engagement this flyer will provide you with some of the features that are in the parent portal as well as instructions on how to create your account and link your child to begin you will need to go to parent portal. Lausd.net once you've gone to parent portal. Lausd.net you will see the option to log in / register as pictured on the right side of the screen once you select login / register you will be able to get started in creating your account there are a few things that you will need you will need a email the four-digit parent can which will be provided to you by the your child school as well as your child's LAUSD 10-digit student ID number this ID number will also be provided to you by your school once you click register login you will have four options your note on the left side of the screen you will select number for to register for an account once you selected register for an account you will be asked to enter your personal information this will be your name and your email address you will also be asked to enter the security information which is a series of numbers and letters and some parents may see images that they will have to select license information has been entered you were here to register which is located on the right bottom portion of the page after doing so you will receive a thank-you note and it will say to complete your registration please activate your account your email will be displayed you will need to go to your personal email account in in that email account you will have received an email from the district with a name for you to complete your registration click on that activate my account link and once you do that you will be prompted create your password for this account you will once again enter your email address and then enter the password the password must meet certain criteria you notice in the top image that there are red X's next to each of the criteria is that the password must meet that you meet each of these cheerier the Red X will turn to a green check once all of the red excess have turn to Green check you can then hit submit at the bottom of the page at this point you will be taken back to the parent portal page because your account has been successfully activated you can now select option one parent log-in once you've selected log in you will be asked to put your username which is your email that you used to create your account you will also be asked to enter the password that you just create it once you've done that you will click login on at the bottom after successfully logging in you will be given the option to download a parent student see your device you will make your selection yes or no and then hit submit this will bring you to your parent landing page it will say welcome your name will appear and below your name you will see a blue button that says add students you will select the add student button and then you will be prompted to enter your students LAUSD ID the date of birth he in that was provided to you in addition there will be an additional security code that you must enter once all of this information has been entered you can then hit you was in notice your name and under retrieved information it will be your child's name finish in this process will be repeated for each of the children that you have within Los Angeles Unified your page was in reappear and you can then select one of your students to see further information that is found within the portal there are several features found in the portal and dr. Tracy Calhoun and Jill are going to speak more in-depth about these particular features thank you Anthony for that very thorough walkthrough of how to registrar parents for the portal as well as how to link their students to their account we will now have Miss Jill O'Brien walk us through the parent portal features and sincerest thank you. Calhoun you for joining us today so now that you have successfully created your parent portal account and added your student Parent Portal features that we want you to all about so once you click on your child's name in your portal main page you will see all of these icons underneath and each one allows you to access different information take a few minutes to look at each one and see what it is that you can access the first one is the red button and it is the attention span with this you can see your true daily attendance and whether they have been asked marked absent or tardy from each class attendance will be taken for every class during distance learning as it would be during physical environment you can also see a more detailed view of your attendance by clicking on button above that says details formation this will show you a calendar view where there are boxes for each date if any of the dates are colored like you see on in September you can click on that box and it will open up show you more detailed information for instance what. Your child was absent or Charlie from what and what weather that there is a reason whether it's been an excused absence verify or unexcused then you will know that you need to call or contact the school to let them know why your child was absent or tardy cute icon is the green one grades and assignments grades in assignments is where you can see your child's schedule it will tell you their teacher's name or name live links to their email addresses if your child has an elementary school you would have probably just the one instructor listed it will have their name their email address can email them from that tea and it will stay a what grade level there is if your child is in middle or High School you will see all of their classes and all of their instructors which class instructor is teaching again live links to their wet their email addresses are under their names if you click on one of the course titles or grade level in elementary school you will get to see some more information and view grades by semester or by year and trimester this will actually take you into schoology when you click on the course from grades and assignments you will see a window that looks similar to this you'll know opened into schoology through the parent portal by seeing the bar across the top is orange bar I believe the newer versions there are blue so you will see you turn orange bar or blue bar cross it looks like this it will stay home and courses in group and we'll have some tabs on the side where you can view your child's courses and grades broken down by semester and then further by classwork homework projects and chest there's another icon which takes you straight into schoology this asks a large is the logo for school G and it will take you directly into the school and she pay here you can see the bar on the top of the page being blew it surpasses the schedule with the email addresses however there is play in here to contact teachers through messages we wanted to show you how to set up notifications in schoology so that you can receive weekly or daily notification from Stuart that tells you a summary of your child grades and assignments so while in school do you should see your child's name in the upper right corner with a little circle with their picture in it a little drop down arrow that you can click on and it will bring this menu down and you should see settings click on settings and you will see two tabs notification and accounts notifications you can choose to turn on an email summary and you can choose whether you would like a daily or a weekly summary to go to your ear to tell you about your child's grades in assignment if you choose weekly then you get to choose what day and what time you will receive those email additionally at the bottom of this page turn on a feature called over do submissions if you turn this on you will receive an email each time that teacher has put create an assignment in schoology with a due date and if your child has not turned in that assignment by the due date or the teacher has not marked as as turned in by that time it will signal this system to send you an email saying that something has been marked as overdue and you won't it will tell you what the sign meant that is in what class make sure to save changes on anything you do on this page okay the next iPhone icon is d e l or English learner progress if you have a student who is English as a second language allows you to track your progress toward reclassification you can see their California English language development test ourselves test for prophecy teacher evaluation and other skills assessment this icon it is a link to health information it includes background information including links to state law we asked questions about what immunization records are required as well as a place to see your child's current vaccination records on file this icon is a discipline module and it it allows you to view information about what is a suspension types of suspension appeal rights for parents and Guardians as well as any formal disciplinary procedures that have been taken towards your child would be noticed in here and you can see that pink Icon is the standardized testing icon it allows you to view your child's standardized test scores from past years and it includes the California assessment of student performance and progress the cast as well as standardized testing and Reporting program start the Celtics scores again can be seen here as well as the physical fitness test advanced placement scores are here and PSAT scores are here icon is for special education services if your child receive special education services you can click to view the current IEP or individualized education program report for your child as well as this is where you would go to apply for extended school year over the summer for years student receiving special education services this a window shows you that when click on your child's IEP a new window open so that you can see the full report there's an icon that allows you to access online application such as school meal application volunteer applications the district's e choices program this light blue icon is graduation progress about available for high school so if your child is in high school between 9th and 12th grade you can see their grades and their completed courses as well as minimum a through G requirements progress toward those a through G requirements the bar graph which a through G requirements have already been completed which are in progress and which are still needed Additionally you can for high school students you can see again further information which graduation requirements have been completed as well as credits earned and GPA scores for middle school students this icon allows parents to see High School enrollment choices and view the District High School graduation requirements the red icon allows you to see your current emergency contact information some of this information is grayed out which cannot be changed online what can be changed or contact phone numbers emergency contact phone numbers also can be changed or updated and you can add an emergency contact here any other changes need to be made through the school be sure to click certified to change anything that you do in this system and then finally the yellow icon is this the transportation access although there is not much asportation happening now in the future there will be so this allows you to see information about your child's bus route including the supervisor of the bus route route details and delay information we'd like to highlight again our website which are the address is here as well as in the chat box you can be accessed also by going through a local district West can we have a couple of videos here to go over again how to register for a parent portal account and how to access add your student to your account refresher will all so we will be putting this webinar is that you're seeing today on our website as well you can re-watch the entire thing or share with friends or family thank you and Doctor Calhoun thank you Jill for that in-depth walk-through of the parent portal features now we'd like for you to do is going full circle we want you to about what you've learned about the parent portal Anthony walked you through how to register your child how to register yourself for the parent portal and how to link your child to your account and then Jill shared with you the mini features of the portal take a moment right now and think about what you learned I hope that it's a lot and one of the reasons why I hope that it's a lot is because we need 100% of our families register so we're hoping that you work with us to build capacity of the other parents in your school Community make sure to share with them what you've learned and send them to our website so that they're able to view this webinar so what I want you to remember and to keep in mind is that we are all in this together and because we are in this together we're going to come out much stronger we want to thank you for taking time to partner with us to team with us to make sure that all of our students graduate college and career-ready that is the end goal ultimately if you have any additional questions please
