Welcome to Mr. Fong's Webpage

About Me: My name is Seng Fong and I have been a teacher at Walt Whitman High School since 2005.  I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Applied Mathematics and graduated in December 2012 from California State University, Los Angeles with a M.A. in Mathematics Education.  As an educator, I firmly believe that every child is capable of learning mathematics with appropriate support and instruction.

Why Math Is Important: A strong mathematics background is becoming increasingly important in competing for jobs in today’s technologically advanced society.

Why Social Studies Is Important: Social studies education helps students understand the world they live in, so they can make informed decisions about issues affecting them, especially when they grow older. Through social studies, students develop historical thinking and literacy as a way of navigating our world.

Mastery Learning and Grading: Mastery Learning and Grading is a growth-mindset approach to K-12 teaching and learning, based on the expectation that everyone can learn when provided with the right conditions and support. It offers all students and teachers an alternative to traditional instruction and grading. By refocusing classroom grading, assessment, instruction, and lesson planning on clear learning targets, and by implementing research-based systems honoring individual variation in learning styles, Mastery Learning and Grading allows more students to succeed academically and ultimately to take charge of their own learning.

Project Based Learning: Throughout the year we will be focusing on how math and social studies can be applied to real-world situations and careers you may hold someday. I want you to realize that learning is more than just “book work”, it improves your critical thinking skills, understanding of the world, and problem solving skills (which is something we all do every day). We will be doing several projects this year that hopefully will help you to see the importance and usefulness of math.
